Anime USA Newsletter – Issue 3
31 Days until Showtime!
Message from the Programming Director
Hello from the Programming Department! We’ve been going full tilt cramming 120+ hours of programming, 70+ panelists, 18 – 18+ events, 12+ artists, 9 gameshows, 6 VO guests, 3 dogs, 2 musicians, and one very tired Meredith Bare, your head of Fan Programming, into 6 rooms. While I’ve been staffing Anime USA since 2005 as a techie, I switched to programming a few years ago and haven’t looked back — it’s the best way to know everything that’s going on, and I’m excited about what we have in store for 2024!
For those of you who remember filling out a programming survey this spring, I’m happy to report that we’ve done our best getting in as many special requests in as possible! Japanese food was on the menu many times, and we have not only “This Anime Makes Me Hungry” returning to walk us through the dishes you see in anime that are never explained, but “Plz Send Noods,” an exploration of Japanese noodle history and culture. Sewing & Fashion were another common request, and we’re following through with workshops on hand sewing, machine maintenance, embroidery, EGL, pattern alterations, and more. You wanted a swap meet? We have two. And more Apothecary Diaries? Emi Lo is on their way!
In point of fact, there’s so much to cover over three days that we decided to have a “Plan Accordingly” session on Friday — where programming staff will be available to answer your questions on where, when, and what the things you see on the schedule are, along with bonus themes on specific topics (remember the Honkai Star Rail trio from last week? It’s not the only Surprise Theme we’re cooking up!). For the insider’s guide we’ll be in Panel 5 on Friday at 1:00p.m., before the mayhem starts.
And of course, to everyone who submitted a panel, workshop, gameshow, or meetup over the last few months, THANK YOU. Our convention wouldn’t be as diverse a slice of fandom without you. We can’t wait to see you there!

Guest Spotlight – Jill Harris
Anime USA is excited to welcome the talented Jill Harris as one of our featured guests this year! Jill has made a name for herself in the voice acting world, bringing to life a diverse range of characters that have captivated anime fans across the country. Known for her exceptional ability to capture both the emotional depth and unique quirks of her characters, she’s become a standout in the industry.
Most recently, Jill’s portrayal of Fern in the highly acclaimed series Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has garnered significant attention. Her performance as the disciplined, loyal apprentice of the titular character showcases her incredible versatility as a voice actor. Through Fern, Jill beautifully conveys the character’s strength, intellect, and quiet resolve, making Fern a fan favorite in this introspective and heartwarming tale.
Beyond Frieren, Jill’s voice has been heard in a variety of beloved anime titles, such as Noelle Silva in Black Clover, Nino Nakano in The Quintessential Quintuplets, and Charlie Morningstar in Hazbin Hotel. Whether she’s voicing fierce warriors, comedic characters, or complex emotional roles, Jill’s talent and dedication to her craft always shine through.
Be sure to join us in celebrating Jill Harris’s incredible work at Anime USA and don’t miss the chance to hear more about her experiences behind the mic!
Cosplay? Yeah, we’ve got that.
Calling all cosplayers! Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a first-time competitor, Anime USA is excited to announce that applications for both the Masquerade and Hall Cosplay contests are now open! This is your chance to showcase your amazing craftsmanship, creativity, and performance skills to fellow fans and our expert judges.
The Masquerade is one of the highlights of the convention, where participants can strut their stuff on stage in an event that combines both cosplay and performance. If you prefer to be judged on craftsmanship alone, the Hall Cosplay contest is the perfect opportunity to display your hard work up close, with detailed judging on the finer points of your costume.
In addition, we are currently accepting applications for those interested in serving as judges for these contests. If you have a keen eye for detail, experience in cosplay craftsmanship, and a passion for helping fellow cosplayers grow, we encourage you to apply!
Don’t miss your chance to be part of this exciting weekend of cosplay magic. Head over to our website to submit your application today!
Music? Check. Footage? Check. It’s AMV Time!
AMVs are back at Anime USA! We’re running on all cylinders, and bringing back tons of programming that has been missing since the pandemic. We’re excited to highlight some of our returning events, including a very special premiere!
The NSFW 18+ AMV Contest returns this year with a showing on both Friday and Saturday night! A more adult friendly version of our normal AMV Contest, the NSFW Contest eases up on the normal PG-13 rules. The contest itself consists of two main categories: Naughty and Nightmare., and just like the main contest, you, the audience, will be the one who decides the winners! Be sure to get your 18+ wristbands as AMV staff will be checking!
We also have an exclusive premiere of AMV Hell 8! The AMV Hell series is a multi-editor project that has been entertaining audiences for over 20 years. AMV Hell 8 has been slated for release in 2025, but we will have an exclusive showing in our AMV Theatre! Please note: while this is not considered an 18+ event, we will be designating host it later in the evenings. Viewer discretion is advised.
As always, our AMV Contest will have one showing on Friday, and two on Saturday! Come see us in Tidewater II, to be entertained by our creators and help us choose the winners!
